Halahin River and its nature life

For nature lovers, Kurumbo Lodge at the shore of the Halahin River, is the perfect place for deep relaxation. Birds have various ‘bathing opportunities’ and the soundscape can be like music to those who love nature. Biodiversity is hard to beat here. To find are for example Herons and Egrets: Grey heron, Great egret, and Cattle egret. Kingfishers: Pied kingfisher, Giant kingfisher, and Malachite kingfisher. Waders: African jacana, Black-winged stilt, and Common sandpiper.

Far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, in the midst of unspoilt nature, the lodge awaits you – hidden in the bush on an idyllic side arm of the Halahin River. This unique eco-lodge was built entirely by hand by local craftsmen with great attention to detail. Impressive is at Kurumbo after arrival, that you can listen to the nature. Birds are talking to you!

I got back this morning from this wonderful lodge which was recommended to me. I stayed at the brand new round house in the most comfortable bed ever. The room us en suite and has solar power. The food is magnificent and the staff are helpful and kind. Their boat is large and aluminium and by far the most comfortable boat trip I’ve been on.

The drummers each night at the campfire let you know you’re in Africa. The surroundings are wonderful and the birdsong amazing. It is owned by Ria an inspirational Dutch lady -perfect English-an artist who has added her flair to this wonderful lodge. Ask to see her art work!

Are there any dangerous animals?

The crocodiles in the mangroves are harmless. We have not heard any reports of crocodile attacks. Our monkey's are nice, this is not the kind of monkey that will steal your belongings like you see in Thailand for example. You won't find real dangerous animals. Even most snakes are harmless. The mosquito still is the most dangerous thing. It is recommended to take the necessary vaccinations when traveling to the Gambia.

Why is Kurumbo Lodge so special?

The location and amazing surroundings makes Kurumbo Lodge a special place. There are no other buildings close to our lodge. Here you will find a tranquil place with total peace. Nothing like the crowdy Senegambia strip in the tourist area.
